Beutler, Gisela (1919-1996)
Gisela Beutler was a German Hispanist. She was the first woman in Germany to hold the post of professor of Spanish Studies (from 1971 at Berlin Free University). She was also the first woman to be awarded a post-doctorate (habilitation) in modern languages at Berlin Free University. After training as a translator, Gisela Beutler studied Romance languages and English language and literature and obtained her doctorate in 1953. Geographically, her research focused on Spain, Mexico and Columbia; thematically, it explored the poetry of the avant-garde in Latin America, folklore research and medieval poetry in Europe.
