Mistral, Gabriela (1889-1957)

Gabriela Mistral (pseudonym for Lucila Godoy Alcayaga) was a Chilean poet. Mistral spent many years living abroad; from 1933, for example, she worked as a consul in the Chilean diplomatic service. She was also a visiting professor at various foreign universities (in Brazil, the US and other places). In 1945 Gabriela Mistral was the first Latin American woman to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.
