Three gables

Vossler, Karl (1872-1949)

Karl Vossler was one of a group of scholars of Romance languages and literature whose work paved the way for establishing the discipline at universities at the beginning of the 20th century. After graduating in German and Romance languages and literature with a dissertation on a topic related to German studies, he was awarded a license to teach Romance languages and literature at Heidelberg University. Vossler held chairs at the universities of Heidelberg, Würzburg and Munich. At the beginning of his academic career he focused on Italian poetry – particularly Dante –, before specializing in French and later in Spanish literature.
